The first edition of the Manni Group Design Award is about to wrap up: the winner of the contest called by the Group in cooperation with YAC – Young Architects Competition will be awarded on March 6, 2020 at the Milan Triennale.
The topic of the call for ideas launched last September is the new railway terminal of Xi’An in China, the ancient endpoint of the Silk Road set to become the site of a cutting-edge technological hub. The challenge was to combine design with the principles of circular economy, by applying the methods used in dry building: steel is an increasingly attractive material in architecture, providing an innovative system that blends function, sustainability and creative freedom.
The jury of the Manni Group Design Award reads like a who’s who of contemporary architecture, with names such as Patrik Schumacher, (Zaha Hadid Architects), Ben van Berkel (UNStudio) and Stefano Boeri, president of the La Triennale di Milano Foundation. The proposals for the Xi’An Train Station have extremely high design quality: the jury members were asked to evaluate hundreds of designs from 75 different countries, which strictly adhered to the requirements in terms of innovation and low environmental impact.
The award ceremony will be held on Friday, March 6th, against the backdrop of the Hall of Honour at Milan’s Triennale. The event will be attended by representatives of the most prestigious architecture firms worldwide, such as Frans van Vuure of UNStudio, Paolo Matteuzzi of Zaha Hadid Architects, Gong Dong of Vector Architects, Francesco Fresa of Piuarch and Giovanni de Niederhausern of Pininfarina.
In addition to the first prizes, honourable mentions will also be awarded by the main sponsors of the contest, Rockwool, Renolit and Dow, with a total prize pool of € 25,000. What is more, the winners will have the honour of presenting their projects to an audience of architects and designers: a unique opportunity to exchange ideas on the future of the construction industry with world-class starchitects.
